1988 Scientific co-worker in the pharmaceutical research department of Ciba-Geigy, Basel, Switzerland.
1989−1994  PhD student at the Institute for Pharmakology of the Freie Universität Berlin under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Günter Schultz (topic: "Pharmakological and Electro-Physiological Characterisation of Receptor-Stimulated Non-Selective Ion Channels in Myelotic Cells and Tissue Muscle Cells").
1994−1998  DFG-Scholar/Post-Doc and scientific co-worker at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute - Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, U.S.A. supervised by Prof. Dr. Randall R. Reed.
1998−2008  Group leader ("Molecular Mechanisms of the Sense of Smell") and DFG-Scholar ("Structure-Function Relationships of Olfactory Receptors") at the German Institute of Human Nutrition, Potsdam-Rehbrücke (WGL) - Molecular Genetics.
